I'm Back! How to Layer With a Denim Jacket | Over 40 Casual Menswear

Casual weekend outfit \ denim jean jacket \ check (buffalo plaid) shirt \ skinny jeans \ brown lace up boots | Silver Londoner, over 40 menswear
Okay... It's fair to say I've been on an extended break from my blog, but I'm glad to announce I'm back and it's full steam ahead!

In truth, my absence has been down to a lack of time to really get involved in posting regularly. But that's all in the past now, and I hope that whatever you see here is of interest to men in their 40s (and over) who are looking for some style inspiration. In fact, not just middle-aged men like myself, but anyone who is looking for lots of everyday looks that can be pulled off by the Average Joe.

Going forward, I hope to be posting regularly on a Monday morning - if you wish to receive an email every time I publish something new, click here to stay in the loop!

Layering with a denim jacket

To me, this is an easy look for most men to carry off - white shirt, jeans, check shirt and denim jacket, added to this a really nice pair of boots (similar). I find that brown is more appealing than black as it gives a warmer look to the outfit especially when paired with your favourite go-to brown leather belt.

You do have to be careful with double denim, and the best way of breaking this up is by having an untucked contrasting shirt such as a vibrant red buffalo plaid shirt - a solid, classic choice that is timeless and never goes out of style.

  1. Hi Keith!
Fantastic news to see you back in the game & such awesome pics to start with. I particularly love the black & white shot.
This is a fab look although my Hubs won't wear "skinny jeans" as he calls them, due to his massive calves. Hope to see you in some baggies too.

    1. Hi MT,
thanks for the kind words, I'm always impressed by the composition of your photos!
I have a love/hate relationship with 'skinny jeans' and I'm more comfortable in something not so tight fitting.. baggies will make an appearance at some point for sure.

      See you in April

    1. Hey Robin,
good to hear from you, I hope you are well.
Your absolutely right about denim, it's a solid piece to have at the ready at any moment coupled with a white shirt and plaid overshirt.. I don't think this look will ever get out of date, do you?

      Best wishes

    1. Thanks Lisa,
every man should have these pieces in their wardrobe don't you think? It's so simple to put together and makes one feel that 'James Dean' vibe inside; timeless, classic and cool.

      See you soon!

    1. Hi Elise,
your too kind, even I have to say most men will look good in a simple denim/white tee/buffalo plaid combo!
You just can't go wrong with this look can you?
I've always felt that a man should have good footwear too, it tells you a lot about him if he wears scruffy shoes with a smart outfit...not a good look!!

Enjoy the rest of your week

    1. Hi Jodie,
you are so right, I've always felt that as I've got older my sense of style has improved. Not so much 'trainers and joggers' these days but nice trousers and brogues.... I love a nice pair of brogues!

      Have a great weekend

    1. Hey Samantha,
fortunately, I have a wife who knows cameras really well. It helps to get good direction from the person at the other end of the lens doesn't it? Samantha, I've always found your photos to be really high quality, is it the same for you or do you set up on a tripod? You have a great sense of style by the way!

      Have a great weekend

    2. You are lucky to have Catherine's skills behind you (and her too!).
      A perfect partnership!
My Husband takes most of my photos. Sometimes one of my youngest girls does the honours.... rarely a tripod.... but sometimes needs must!
You are far too kind with your comments! I never seem to have enough time to take photos, and my husband is not keen on catching me "in situ"....He would baulk at the thought of people coming over to speak to us, or asking questions.
The weather usually has something to say too.
      {I cherish those days of perfect clear light}
Improving my photos is my next "project".....unfortunately I lack the skills and the patience!
      {Must try harder}
      Welcome back to blogging!
I am looking forward to getting some more inspiration from a different point of view.

I'll pop over to say hi very soon..

      Have a great weekend

you're too kind! Thanks for sharing me on your social media.
I hope this blog does give a bit of inspiration to like-minded men, who want to really make an effort in how they present themselves..
We spend most of our early years dressing in branded sports items or something grotesque that just has no depth, (I'm not keen on being a walking advert)..
I certainly have matured my dress style as I've got older, which is a good thing for sure!

      Have a great week

  11. Hi Keith, and welcome back to blogland. I can see that you and Catherine will create a dynamic blogging dynasty and I'll be watching your progess with keen delight. Not only do you both have a great eye for style, but your photography skills are pretty hot too. What a perfect set up.
Working full time and running a blog is quite a challenge isn't it, but I think you've done the right thing to decide on a once a week post to keep it under control. Well done and good luck x

    1. Hi Anna,
      thanks for the great comments!
I hope it does find a niche that gives men a little glimpse of inspiration.
I won't be wearing the latest Milan style.. that just sends the wrong message. I want to retain a realistic look that any man could look at and know that they probably have this in their wardrobe..

      Speak to you soon!
